18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

You ever notice how many focus on the first part of Christ’s admonition but not the second? Laodiceans lack zeal, they say, but a big part of the problem with Laodicea is that they need to repent!
The Bible warns over and over about being deceuved. Unlike many of the other six churches, Laodicea had it well off physically. Physical comfort seems to lull people into believing they deserve their blessings. They begin to believe their riches are a sign that God is pleased with them.
That is dangerous ground. The other churches faced deception as well, but most of it was blatant and foreign. The deception in Laiducea was from within. Like the Pharisees, it makes it difficult to make things right, since they don’t know it is wrong to begin with.
Self-examination must be done with an eye towards truth. Otherwise, it is just an exercise in self-justification.
