Reflections: God is One

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

~ Dt 6:4-5

God created Adam and Eve. They were to cleave together and become “one flesh” (Ge 2:24).

Jesus said, “I and my Father are one” (Jn 10:30). They are one as Adam and Eve are one. They are combined in love and unity.

We are also to be one, and we are to be one with Jesus and the Father.

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

~ Jn 17:20-22

How are we to be one? Through love.

I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

~ v23

We can now read the Shema (Dt 6:4-9), and we can see that we are told to love God totally and completely. We reflect being created in God’s image when we do so. We become one with God.

God created humans, and He immediately married them. God then rested on the Sabbath. The laws of marriage and the Sabbath have existed since creation. What else is the link between the two?
